chain chewing

The act of taking the gum you are chewing (presumably used up) and putting it in the wrapper of the new piece of gum you are about to consume. This repeats itself until the supply of gum is exhausted.

Man alive, I was so shook up while taking the SAT, I was chain chewing the whole time! But I gave a supervisor a piece, he said he would put in a good word for me.

To tell higher-ups something good about a person trying to appeal to the higher-ups.

Jones: If I dont get this position I don't know what I'll do.
