An old-school Western euphemism and dark innuendo for an animal (typically a wild, untamable, or dangerous horse or head of cattle) that is so problematic it needs to be put down with a lead bullet.

Extended to people who are hopelessly stubborn, vicious, or useless and need the same treatment.
