verb. bft, background facetime, bft-ing

term used to describe the activity of video calling someone but then not talking to them. typically used as an alternative for hanging out with someone when you can't do it in person. individuals in the call will carry-on with their normal tasks (e.g., studying, watching videos, laundry, etc.) and often will mute themselves as to not distract the person they're videoing (essentially: facetiming someone in the background while you both do other tasks).

video calling platforms are not limited to facetime - it can also include skype, zoom, etc.
