A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on Earth's surface. By relating seemingly unrelated data, GIS can help individuals and organizations better understand spatial patterns and relationships. Most of the information we have about our world contains a location reference: Where are USGS stream gauges located? Where was a rock sample collected?
When the GIS data is incorporated into a map it is referred to as a GIS map or a GISM.
