adhesin

a bacterial protein that mediates attachment to a host molecule, whether that molecule is on the surface of the host cell, in the extracellular matrix, or is a soluble protein.
Borrelia burgdorferi uses a large and diverse set of adhesins, several of which have been experimentally shown to contribute to the ability of the bacterium to cause infection and disease in mice.
