wergild

it means "man price". it was an old form of revenge during the time when beowulf was written. usually it was paid by the giving of a man as payment for wrongs done, but sometimes it could be paid by services rendered.

beowulf paid wergild from his father to hrothgar by killing grendel and his mother.
