Selfish pain describes the inner discomfort or pain you feel when you broke your own sense of fairness towards other people. By taking something from others to your own advantage, especially by hurting the other person in doing so, making you feel a strong sense of remorse. This feeling of unease or inner discomfort is a consequence of doing something you yourself feel is unfair, but you do it anyway.

Examples of this are:
- Unfairly or deceitfully take something for yourself from another person who needed it more than you
- Tricking a vulnerable person to give you more than you feel you deserve
- When you find yourself satisfied, but you still take more for yourself, making the other person not have enough to feel satisfied, which makes you feel bad
"I feel a strong sense of selfish pain from the moment I tricked that old lady to give me three times what people usually pay us for mowing the lawn.... I want to go back and return the money, but I am too ashamed."
