A hipster is someone who buys records even if they don't have a record player, just to say they bought records. They listen to music that no one actually likes. Their taste in music is to make them seem cooler, by being non conformist, therefore making them conform to nonconformists. Hipsters tend to wear flannel and sweaters from flea markets.
Oh look at that hipster! I heard he listened to Sonic Youth to cover up his love for Rihanna.

Hipster in the contemporary sense is a subculture of men and women generally in their 20's and 30's. Aspects of this sub culture include rampant consumerism of "ironic" or "kitschy" pop culture items and art, examples of this include large colored sun glasses, indie music, street art. The nihilistic and self indulgent characteristics of this group have grown and developed from the failure of past youth cultures i.e beats, hippies, and punks to make any sort of true cultural or political change. Thus the hipster culture is an acceptance of all the things which previous countercultures believed they were fighting against such as commercialism and consumerism.
Those hipsters over there dress ridiculous and don't care about anything.

Usually in their late teens or early twenties... Male hipsters consist of sloppy facial hair looks, cheap flanel t-shirts, fixed-geared bikes, and ugly girlfriends. Female hipsters consist of facial piercings, bad body odor, straight up ugly outfits, loose clothing with bland ugly colors, and really bad teeth. Both male and female hipsters love to drink coffee, have "deep" conversations, smoke pot, drink alcohol, and "enjoy life"...
You can usually find poser hipsters at places like starbucks. Hipsters are against corporate america, and drinking at starbucks would be as corporate as you could get. It's pretty easy to spot poser hipsters considering every hipster is a poser. A stone cold poser. These people love to just to ruin nice urban areas.

An evolved emo. Usually happens when a closet emo or an actual emo discovers that there is in fact, other colors other than black and pink so they star mixing it up a lot to a point that their clothes wont match.

Unlike the species from which they evolved, they don't try to act suicidal, on the contrary, they act like life is nice to them even though everybody hates them even other hipsters.

They tend to "like" things like music and clothes that non-hipsters don't like because that makes them feel special an superior even though it makes the look stupid and asshole-y. This is in part because when they were emo they used to think they were shit and now they think they are The Shit, this kind of thinking, of course, is wrong.

Irony, no matter how much they try, wont work for them because they simply don't know how to use it.

They are usually NOT poor people but tend to act like it.

Male hipsters usually become really thin and Female hipsters start dressing non-sexy.
They also wear overpriced used clothes.
Andy:Look at the way that guy is dressed, it so much color i think I'm gonna have seizure!
Jorge:Uh-hu
Andy:What the fuck is he listening to?!
Jorge:Sound like shit
Andy: his girlfriend looks kinda cute but her clothes! Ugh
Jorge: Dude you are looking at a fucking hipster!

A hipster is very similar to an Indie Kid. Hipsters generally are snobbish, holier-than-thou sorts of people. They tend insert non-sequiturs about pop-culture into everyday speech, as well as obscure music references, and comments on political goings-on. They're quite fun if you get to know them, but be from another label and you might be snubbed. They frequent coffee shops and the salvation army and know more than you ever will or would hope to about... well, pretty much anything obscure or remotely creative/underground-culture-based.
1: Did you see her shirt? I bet she got it at the salvation army.
2: Oh, yeah, thats that Hipster that works in that coffee shop. She's a bitch, but she's cool.

A label used by the public to describe individuals who's cultural preferences are rooted in independent media rather than mainstream society. With the glorification of superficiality in Western culture post - 9/11 (celebrities, lifestyles, manufactured pop music etc.) any media which deviates from this and fosters an intellectual ethos is derided as 'pretentious' by current generations, who have subsequently become accustomed to the holocaust of mediocrity now permeating popular culture. Modern hipsters are mostly individuals who came of age during the 90's, and (having their beloved culture usurped by the information age and it's subsequent technology) find a defiant comfort in aspects of culture which reflect a kitsch/amateur/thrift store aesthetic representative of the times they grew up in. Because of this, they sometimes hold opinions which seem obnoxious to those who can't relate to having been a part of it. This is not usually intentional however, and mostly represents their anger at how the society they grew up in (which in an unusual move for society put substance and authenticity first) has been replaced by one which instead celebrates superficial values. Of course, those unfamiliar with this tend to interpret the hipster phenomenon as a fabricated trend (or cheap substitute for previous subcultures), and proceed to mock them for not sharing their vapid love of the Kardashians, Geordie Shore and the rest of their mainstream ilk. Hence, the hipster label was born.
(the unpoken rule of being a hipster is to not admit to being one, but I've broken it for this example)

Average Joe: Are you a hipster?

Hipster: Depends, can you appreciate the fact that I prefer stuff with substance? you know, stuff I can personally connect to? because god knows I can't connect to what others like, and they've made their feelings about this very apparent. That's their whole game; if you don't like what they do, you're the freak, the weirdo, the mental person. Rejection forces people to find somewhere they will be accepted. For me, its in the music and movies which say 'don't worry, we're not like them either'. It's the only thing that keeps me sane. Can you understand that?

Average Joe: *Derisive expression*

Hipster: Well that explains it all doesn't it? We try to be accepted, and get ridiculed for it. We try to be independent, and get ridiculed for it. Brilliant :/

Ok, so most of the definitions of this word circulating are wrong. Yes I said it. The word hipster stems from the word hip. It is safe to say that 'hip' can be defined as 'what is cool right now'. A hipster can be defined as a person that adopts fashion, music taste, behaviours, blablah of what is considered 'cool right now'. It's just logic. Just Google "define: hipster" and you shall see that I am not talking utter bullshit. So anyone saying a hipster is trying to be 'independent' and striving for 'individuality' and is somewhat 'unique' or what ever crap I hear, you are wrong.
A hipster is a person that involves themselves with a popular scene. So now we have to understand that a 'popular scene' is subjective to the area you live in. So where I come from (england) a hipsters traits are as follows: chino jeans, listen to house music such as 'Swedish House Mafia' and 'Skrillex', vest tops, fake tan (men and women), identical to all of their friends, watch Jersey Shore, Georgie Shore, TOWIE and other crap like that. Paradoxically, the most defining trait of a 'hipster' are those that throw around the word 'hipster' its self because using the word 'hipster' is actually what is popular at the moment. So if you like to use the word hipster, you my friend are a HIPSTER. Yes, it is obvious I am going to get a lot of thumbs down on this definition because most people are just ignorant. However, I have matured to learn that people are dumb and don't listen to reason or logic.
WRONG USE - "Yo, that guy in the flannel shirt with a fleet foxes band shirt underneath and the old film camera round his neck is a massive hipster."

RIGHT USE - "That young fellow there that looks like he dropped out of school and had to do his GCSEs at college and now in a dead end job; slaving away to some fat rich person behind a desk. He seems to spend the majority of his life projecting his own problems on to other people that are above him in society, sleeping around with as many women as possible in order to raise his rank in his cave man attitude driven friendship group. His vest, chinos, comb over and fake tan make him look very hipster!"
