People hate them because they think they call themselves goth. Gerard Way said himself that he didn't think they were goth. They only got labeled that cause Gerard has an obsession with death. I think thats cool. Their sound is unlike anything I have ever heard.

A (in my opinion) very talented group of guys who despise the word 'emo'. The amazing band consists of Ray Toro - lead guitar, Frank Iero - rhythm guitar, Mikey Way - bass, Bob Bryar - drums, & the wonderful Gerard Way - vocals.
I am aware that a lot of you who read this will be like 'oh its an emo kid' or 'they're so emo' BUT. They're not emo, if you actually listen to the lyrics, they are an ANTI suicide band. For example, the song Famous Last Words states: "I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this word alone." & So on & so forth.
My Chemical Romance has 3 studio albums - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love; Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge; & The Black Parade. 2 Live CD/DVDS - Life On The Murder Scene & The Black Parade Is Dead!
Their most popular songs are Helena, I'm Not Okay (I Promise), Welcome to the Black Parade, Teenagers, & Famous Last Words.
I personally did not hear all of their songs on the radio, I found them, so there may have been more mainstream songs, I don't know.
MCR (as they are often abbreviated) formed in the time of 9/11. Gerard was on his way to work in NY & saw the bodies falling/jumping out of the building. At that point he though what am I doing with my life?
He decided to call up some old friends & formed the band. The original drummer, Matt Pelissier, was in the band when it formed, obviously. He later was fired because of his poor performance & lack of devotion to the band.
As for where the name came from, Mikey & Gerard were working at Barnes & Noble. Mikey saw the words 5 Tales of Chemical Romance on the back or inside of a book (whose author I forget). When he joined the band, he thought he should add My to it to give it a twist. From then on, they were known as MCR, My Chem, & My Chemical Romance of course.
Future plans - 2009: They recently filmed a music video for their cover of Bob Dylan's 'Desolation Row'. MCR recorded this song for the movie 'The Watchmen', which will be in theaters in March. My Chem is also set to record an album sometime this year, claimed to be 'early 2009'.
In conclusion, a great band... in my opinion.

BEGINNINGS:
My Chemical Romance is a New Jersey band that was started by vocalist Gerard Way and after the 9/11 attacks. Before that, Gerard was working as a comic book artist in New York, but he didn't feel like his job was helping anyone. He wanted to reach out to people. 9/11 spurred him into action and it was also his inspiration for the song "Skylines and Turnstiles". He got in contact with his friend Matt Pelissier (drummer) and began running songs. Later he called up guitarist Ray Toro and asked for him to play. They still needed a bass though, so Gerard asked his brother Mikey Way if he would learn bass so he could be in the band. Frank Iero became a later addition (former lead guitar and vocals for the New Jersey band, Pencey Prep). Matt later left the group in 2004 and was replaced by Bob Bryar, the tech man touring with The Used.
Gerard used to get drunk before every show to prevent stage fright. All the drinking eventually made him suicidal and he didn't want to go on like this way anymore. He decided that he wanted to take his life but was fortuantely talked out of it by his Tour Manager. August 11, 2004, Gerard went cold turkey from his drinking problem and taking pills (Xanax). He has been sober ever since.

There has been controversy over the precise musical genre of My Chemical Romance. They have been things such as: punk, emo, hardcore, screamo, goth, and vampiric rock. I personally don't label them. They have an entirely unique sound all of their own that doesn't need a definition. Call them what you want, but to me, they are simply MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE.

My Chemical Romance is a sincere band and loves to play live and meet fans. They genuinely care about their fans too, and not just about the publicity. At shows, Gerard will tell the crowd things like: "If you or someone you know is suicidal, YOU NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT. Talk to a friend, a teacher, a parent, someone from school, I don't give a fuck who. Just talk to someone."

My Chemical Romance are a band from NJ. I;m not going to attempt to give them a specific genre, because they have many influences. Guitar wise they use a mixture of punk and metal riffs, mainly due to the bands love of bands like the Misfits, and metal bands such as iron Maiden. Lyrically, Gerard Way writes in a style similar to that of Morrisey, using metaphors and story-telling to get across his point.
In reading the other definitions here, I was quite angered by the many comments about the band slitting their wrists, or encouraging their fans to do so, because one of the most important messages the band gives out is that self-harm is not acceptable. "No-one should ever feel the need to hurt themselves, because the rest of the world hurts you badly enough." They hate the idea of self-harm, and will always encourage their fans to get some help. Regardless of whether or not you personally like the music, people should never insult a band that to someone else could mean so much, and could have helped someone else so much. I don't like Slayer, to me slayer just sounds like noise, but I won't insult them because to someone they could have been a great help, could inspire them, or could just mean a lot to someone.
Band members are Gerard Way, Frank Iero, Mikey Way, Ray Toro, and Bob Bryar. Yes, they are all quite good looking, but that isn't what the music is about, and they get quite uncomfortable about the attention to their looks.

My Chemical Romance isn't any type of music. They are what they are and that's it. Don't think just because some of their songs have meaningful lyrics in them that they encourage suicide and wrist slitting and low self-esteem.The people who judge them after hearing one song or just by looking at their picture need to get over themselves immediatly or we may have a SERIOUS problem on our hands. People think that their fans are depressed emo losers who think there's absolutly no reason to live, well to all of them, I'm proudly addicted to MCR and if you ask people who know me they will say that I'm the happiest, most hyper and random kid you will ever meet, and that I laugh uncontrollably. So there to all those haters, there, take a gander at that! O_O sorry about that. Anywho, also their lyrics have deeper meanings than any of those rap lyrics. And I personally that all rap "songs" if that is what you call them, are extremely degrading to women. But then again, that's just my opinion, preach what you want to, just believe in it yourself first. For all the people who think MCR really doesn't save lives, well, I'm living proof. If it wasn't for MCR I would probably either be dead or completly miserable trying to commit suicide. MCR has helped me through a lot, and they truly are an inspiration in everything they do. They are the most talented people in the world and they don't act lke assholes either because of it. And they don't do any of this at all for the money, they started it to make a difference in the world, and they are still are.

An awesome band that features five amazing and talented guys: Gerard way, Mikey way, Frank iero, Ray Toro, and Bob Bryar.
They're an alternative rock band, but is also considered to be an emo band. Which is not true since most people consider the term emo as a trend. They are NOT emo for they even said so in an interview. THey are themselves and no one should label them emo.
They're awesome and you should seriously check them out sometimes since their music really speaks the truth.
The world can't always be about lovey dovey stuff as many people write today. it's also about the cruel things that's happening in daily lives and they speak the truth and real emotions that you feel once in your life
