That Basrawi stole diamonds from his sisters and gave them as presents to his wife. First used in Old English about 1300. Originally from Arabic to describe a resident of Basra, Iraq a Basrawi who had no money to pay for a wife so he stole from his own sisters to make his dowry payment to the bride's family.
