Making Trees 

Yacht(sailboat) racing term referring to the visual speed indicator of looking at a competitors sail edges and the trees on the land behind. If trees are appearing in front of the other vessel, then you are going faster. If the trees are appearing behind the other vessel, then it is going faster.

To see the forest for the trees suggests that a person is capable of discerning the bigger picture, from observing the more granular details. Conversely, when used in the negative form, this suggests that someone is easily preoccupied by the details, thus allowing them to obscure the bigger picture.
