SMO is used as an abbreviation for "Special Military Operation"; a title that Russian President Vladimir Putin assigned to his country's invasion of Ukraine. Some objectives of this "Special Military Operation", as stated by Vladimir Putin, include fully annexing the Donbas region of Ukraine's Eastern oblasts of Donetsk and Luhansk in addition to the Southern oblasts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine, and the prevention of NATO expansionism. It is thought that this term "Special Military Operation" is used to downplay the scale of the conflict initiated by Russia. The term is popular amongst pro-war/pro-russian media, journalists and activists.
On February 24th 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the commencement of a SMO (Special Military Operation) within the borders of Ukraine.
