Dates back to the 60s at MIT. Although the meaning remains the same it was not a typo. It was used competitivly by programers working on chess AI. When one out programmed the others he would refer to himself as King and the others as pawns. It started being used on Fido Net across the BBS world before internet went public, although it was used on the internet between university's at the time.
Def: To PWN or Pawn someone/something means to remove its status, to be made unimportant. It means that you have proved yourself better than another.
Heavily used in Online gameing community.

The total shut down or domination of a person, place, or thing. Pwn came from the word owned, which came from the word owned, which came from the word own, which originated from the word... cat. PWN has become one of the most frequently used words throughout the world. For example when someone or something is tricked, fooled, made a fool, was and now is a fool, punched in the face, hit with a frying pan, or is a moron.

Started with a spelling error in Warcraft where a message that was supposed to say "Player has been owned" was mis-spelled to "Player has been pwned"
It's spread from there, taking on different forms such as pwnd pwnage pwns or pwnd
1) used in a game when someone has totally pwnd, usually against an inexperienced or less experienced player.
2) used to describe an epicly amazing item
3) used by computer nerds who cant think of anything else to say to diss someone else's mom.
