A noun- A person who goes to a prep school.
A girl that wears knee high socks, sweaters, plaid skirts and buckled shoes. Not to be confused with someone that wears short shorts, brand name t-shirts(or tank-tops), and wears gallons of make-up. This would actually be called a slut, hooker, whore, or popular girl. If someone goes to your school(and your school isn't a prep school) then they are NOT preps.

Preps are from rich families, academically gifted, and destined to make a lot of money just like their parents. It is ridiculous to say that they are 'ditzes' and 'sluts'. You would not make it into a prep school if you were either of these things. And preps do not wear American Eagle. They shop at Neiman Marcus.

Also, it's not like preps want to be anything else. Whenever somebody comes to a prep school dressed ghetto/goth/hooker, they are either immediately ostracized and made fun of, or more commonly they prep it up too. ;)

Also, it is ridiculous for people who pierce holes through their lips and noses just to fit in, to call US posers.
Come to La Jolla Country Day, where we don't care that a bunch of goths wearing dog collars and chains, in remedial 4th grade math, make fun of us!

Prep and proud.

A Young student in high school or college who:

1. Performs well academically
2. Plays sports such as Crew, Tennis, Golf, or Lacrosse
3. Comes from an established "Old money" background
4. Is favoured by their school, church, and other local establishments
5. Is good looking
6. Went to/ goes to preparatory school

Of course, a prep need not have ALL these qualities but many do. A common misconception about preps is that they consist only of the Patrician New England "Old stock" establishment. While this is generally true to a large extent this is not to exclude the types of preps who come from the Southern and Southwestern regions of the US (who more closely resemble the "popular" definition of preps but we'll get into that in a minute). Students who fit the definition of "preppy" can be found in any part of the world, including the upper circles of Europe, and Latin America.

Preps have historically been White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, however, this criteria has somewhat changed in recent decades of racial/ethnic integration.

Preps represent all sides of the political spectrum, the more liberal ones being found in Connecticut or Massachusetts, or the more conservative ones being found in Georgia or Texas.

Preps vary in their attitude towards others and range from being completely condescening to being all inclusive. The majority of preps are fairly indifferent to those outside of their own type, usually not out of snobbery, but out of their tendency to be more private as individuals.

Perhaps the biggest debate involving preps today is the definition of "prephood". The New England preps often state the the more common definition of prep defined by people who wear Hollister, Abercrombie & Fitch, etc. is a false construction, whereas the "true prep" actually wears brands like J Crew, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, and Ralph Lauren. Whlie a true prep is more inclined to match the latter definition, there is not a rigid line between types and many preps actually wear a mixture of the two styles, wearing the established brands for school or church and the newer brands in casual settings. Of course, it is important to note that true prephood is NEVER defined by clothes alone.

Finally, preps are often seen as conformists, but in reality, this perception comes from their emphasis on constructing highly esteemed careers and willingness to accept the concept of the "establishment" as an inevitability. Thus many preps aspire to go into business, medicine or politics later in life.

I pretty much match the definition of a prep and am pretty proud of it. =)

Preps aren't what everyone seems to think on this site, they arent the popular whores at every hs who wear reaveling outfits and shop at AF, hollister and those stores, being preppy(the adjective form) isnt about where you buy you clothes and what you wear, its about how you act and your overall lifestyle

they wear Basic Polos usually bright or classic colors, slacks(khakis, plaids, seersuckers), occaisionally jeans, in the summer cargo shorts and shorts similar to the pants they wear, ribbon belts, for shoes we wear birkenstocks, topsiders, penny loafers, and occaisionally classic type sneakers (ie old tennis shoe type sneakers) ou clothes are usually bought from J. Crew, Vinyard Vines, Lacoste, B.Bros, and if we must shop in any of the mall "trendy party prep" type stores we shop at AE which is the most classic and preppy of those (AF, HCO, Aero)

A prep is always courteuos, kind and respectful, they are the kind of people that grandparents and parents look at and say" hes a fine young man"

a preppy lifestle consists of living in a nice community and contrary to popular belief we dont always live in huge houses and you'll never find us living in homes labled as mcmansions, our homes always have archetectural value and are always tastefully and classicly decorated, in our garge you will typically find a car such and a volvo, vw, audi, bmw and occasionnaly another european made car, we participate un lifelong sports such as crew, golf, tennis, sailing, swimming, and sometimes lacrosse
and most importantly WE GO TO PREP SCHOOLS, day or boarding

What most people have to come to realize is that prep is a lifestyle enjoyed by a fortunate few of us it isnt a clothing style, it includes how we live, how we act and what we do
Older Prep 1: Look at that young man holding the door for that woman.
Older Prep 2: A fine young lad indeed, I wish my daughter would find a man like that

Word originated from northeastern preparatory school uniforms. In modern use, refers to teenagers intrested in upper class clothing and materialistic goods. "Prep" attire includes shirts, polos, ripped jeans, and such. Cheap "knockoff" prep brands include Aeropostale and American Eagle (polos, $20-$30). Medium prep brands include Hollister and Abercrombie and Fitch (polos, $30-$50). True prep brands include Ralph Lauren and Lacoste (polos, $65-$80). High-end department stores, such as Nordstrom's and Bloomingdale's often carry real "preppy" clothing. "Prep" refers to the way one presents themselves. Many such preps will often "pop" their collar. Many believe this looks stupid, but the polo shirt was invented by Renee Lacoste, and the collar was designed to be popped to protect the neck from the sunlight while playing tennis. A common misconception is the stereotype that all "Preps" are dumb and ditzy. Although many are snotty and dumb, many are nice and intelligent. Female preps can often be associated with the word Jap (Jewish American Princess).
Non-prep: You spent $80 on a new shirt?!
Prep: Yeah, its really nice!
Non-prep: Ugh, you are such a prep!
