Why does everyone say SOAD is loaded with Tattoos and piercings? I don't think any of them has a visible piercing or tattoo. The only strange thing about their appearance is the beards. Yeah, they have some really weird looking beards. Often their songs reflect this weirdness. But it's good weirdness; it sounds cool, it's catchy and it makes you think. System IS different, I could always tell if a song was by system on the radio (even before I started listening to them) thanks to Serj's crazy Armenian voice. Some people refuse to acknowledge their talent because they're stuck in the days of Slayer and Black Sabbath (who are good... but their time is over), but I think SOAD is truly one of a kind.
System of a Down's style might not be right up you alley, but you can't deny that they're unique.

Listen, I'm a death metal kid, and I even have to agree that yes, System of a Down kicks ass. To all you pop-poser assholes out there, kill yourself. Lets summarize what we have learned, shall we? System of a Down is a good band even to some death-heads, and all pop-fags deserve to die. End of discussion.
"Did you see that pop idiot at the SOAD concert last night?"
"Yes, but I killed him without mercy."

System of A Down is a very unique alternative metal band from Armenia. They mix strong political beliefs into their often unintelligible lyrics. All of the members have a unique style of playing their instruments, and Serj Tankien has one of the most unusual voices in popular music today. Who cares if they're pop. If they make good music, it shouldn't matter. The Beatles were pop, but they are one of the most influential bands ever. Oh, and by the way... the person who said that they use Drop-D is only half right. They play in Drop-D tuning one whole step down.
None that I can think of.

One of the very few unique bands, both lyrically and musically. They are nu-metal, although different from most other nu-metal, mainly in the sense that they're good. I know people who listen to death metal and they agree that System of a Down is a good band. Anyone who calls them "pop" obviously hasn't heard any of their songs, or just wants to be "cool" by putting something controversial in an online dictionary. Although System of a Down has entered the mainstream after the release of Toxicity, it has still maintained a good, unique sound, although gaining many unwanted poser fans.
System of a Down has deep, meaningful lyrics, good vocals, and a unique sound, unlike most other nu-metal. Good thing I can understand the lyrics, unlike many posers who pretend to like them since they saw part of "Aerials" on MTV.

An amazing bad, System of a down are metal, but to all the jackass's out there who say they are crap... your fucking wrong, as the stuff they sing about adress's the world's problems. Daron Malakian is one of the best guitarist of his time, Serj Tankian is an amazing singer, Shavo Odadjian is a slick bass player, and John Dolmayan is a skillful drummer. One of the best bands on the planet, they are just freaking amazing in every sense of the world. Owning three of their albums, I have listened to them enought to know they are amazing. The band's type of music is generally alternative metal/rock, thugh they have turned their genre into an amazing style. So to all the System fans out there, though System arn't the best, they are ONE of the best, and I sault you. To everyone who is a fan of metal and hasn't tried them, you'll love them, and if your a dumbass who thinks they scream/shout and can't sing, then do yourself a favour: get a life.
if you like System Of A Down, but are new to them, a great Album to start with is Toxicity - not only a great album, it has some of the best songs ever made on it

Like many late-'90s metal bands, System of a Down struck a balance between '80s underground thrash metal and metallic early-'90s alternative rockers like Jane's Addiction. Their dark, neo-gothic alternative metal earned a cult following in the wake of the popularity of such likeminded bands as Korn and the Deftones.
Vocalist Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan formed System of a Down in Southern California in the mid-'90s. They quickly earned a strong following in Los Angeles, largely based on strong word of mouth. A three-song demo began circulating through metal collectors, and their fan base soon spread throughout not only America, but Europe and New Zealand. By the end of 1997, the group had signed to American, then distributed by Columbia Records. American/Columbia released the group's eponymous debut album in the summer of 1998, securing the band opening spots on the Slayer and Ozzfest tours.
System of a Down's best album by far is Toxicity. Buy it, and love it forever.
