Due to the shifts in the cultural and political arenas, the late 1970's/early 1980's was a thriving time for the Latino community in the Northeast region of the United States. Activism on college campuses was common ground. For example, only five years prior, Rutgers College opened its doors to women. As the campus' Latino population increased , it became evident that the quality of student life for Latinos was not equal to their White and Black counterparts. Furthermore, the funding for Latino groups and activities was also non-existent. Realizing a change needed to be made, Corazones Unidos Siempre/Chi Upsilon Sigma Sorority, Inc. emerged. Chi Upsilon Sigma (C.U.S.) has been in existence since April 29, 1980. Established on the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers – the State University of New Jersey, C.U.S. was officially voted into the Greek council on March 11, 1981. Our founders are 7 Latinas who had the desire to create an organization to promote leadership among the Latino community. More importantly, it was their desire to create a sisterhood – a place away from home in which the members could feel the strong sense of family, which is such a force in the Latino culture.
When a CUSSIE walks in the room, you know that she is there. She is not afraid to voice her opinion, not afraid to be different, not afraid to "OD".

We are different beCUS you think of us in a different light beCUS we are not afraid to be ourselves. This makes us different.
