Trade jargon; noun (present tense); noun(past tense); verb(active);
The presence of damage, or the act of damaging the working edge of a tool, leaving a gap.
i.e. using a knife to cut through a soft material embedded with a harder material (cardboard with staples, drywall with screws) might barn your blade.
"Stupid green horn barned my snips. Can't cut for shit anymore."
"Damnit, there's a huge barn in my blade now."
"This board is all barned out on the factory edge, let's use it for strips."
"The apprentice is over there barning out your snips on some hanger wire."
