An underground movement largely associated with zines (that were usually free or non-profit). Began by members of the bands Bikini Kill and Bratmobile, who found out that they were all vegitarians, feminists, and had been sexually abused. It bled into the bands' (and their followers' bands') music, which screamed views on rape and sexism against women. Eventually it became mostly about how males largely dominated the punk scene, and riot grrrls wanted to change that.

The riot grrrl culture encouraged girls who didn't know how to sing or play to start bands, and encouraged such DIY as making their own clothing. The movement began its fifteen minutes of fame in 1992, much to the riot grrrls' embarassment since before and after it would've been almost completely underground and, mostly, it still is.

Riot grrrl bands are always punk and never "poppy." Even if they become famous they don't "sell out" to major record labels, and instead sign to labels such as Kill Rock Stars and Sub-Pop.
Some more popular riot grrrl bands: L7, Le Tigre, Sleater-Kinney, Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Babes in Toyland, Huggy Bear, Voodoo Queens, Heavens to Betsy, and many more.
