This can refer to many things, like the second letter of the greek alphabet, software in development, or a person.

In the case of a person, a beta male is submissive, clingy, indecisive, weakminded, and unconfident. He can't deal with confrontation or challenges. He lets things happen instead of taking action.

When it comes to women, he either sucks up to them and loses their respect, or is too afraid to pursue them. If he does get a girlfriend, he makes too many demands on her, and either drives her away or becomes locked into servitude. The hoverhand is one of the surest signs of a beta.

Overall, he is the opposite of an alpha male.
Did you see him spam that girl's facebook page full of messages without getting a response? That was really beta.

Get the beta mug.
A popular device used for quotation and storytelling.

This began on the *chan imageboards, where quoting text places a > in front of it, turning it green. This effect can also be done manually. Before long, this feature was put to innovative use. When quoting another post, greentext is frequently used for summary, criticism, and ridicule. Its other major use is storytelling, in which a lengthy story is told through fragmentary statements in greentext.

Greentext became highly popular for both of these functions due to its convenience. When quoting a post, it is easier to summarize than to respond in full. When telling a story, stringing together sentence fragments is a grammatically easier alternative to prose composition (it also makes for lighter reading).

This feature has become so widespread that it is sometimes used outside of imageboards (eg Youtube comments).
>be me
>be 17
>going on a weeklong summer camping trip
>greentext story of how I lost my virginity etc

>he doesn't use a Linux-based OS
>laughinggirls.jpg

>implying implications

In the first half of the 20th century, this was a hat synonymous with manly style. It was about looking cool without appearing juvenile.

In present times, the fedora is a trademark of the socially inept beta male. He is attempting to distance himself from pop culture with the distinct style of past fashion. But he captures none of the suave, and only comes off looking like an oblivious, pompous fool. This is especially the case when it's a low-quality fedora coupled with unfashionable clothes and an unkempt appearance.

Modern fedora-wearers are typically associated with the *chan internet culture and Asperger's Syndrome (aspie).
If you are not Humphrey Bogart, you should not wear a fedora.
