off your rocker

Crazy, out of control, nuts.

In addition to being a kind of chair, a 'rocker' is a device that controls the movement of a piece of machinery. When a machine is off its rocker, it no longer works correctly.

1) You can't walk down the street in your underwear! Are you off your rocker?

2) I'm afraid Aunt Betty is really off her rocker these days.

behind the eight ball

In a bad situation, in a losing position.

The phrase comes from pool (or billiards). When the cue (white) ball is behind the eight (black) ball, a player usually has no shot.

I'm really behind the eight ball at work. I have too much work to do but we can't afford to hire anyone to help out.

go to seed

To decline or fall apart; to become worn and shabby.

This phrase comes from gardening. After a plant has flowered, it falls apart, sending its seeds into the soil. As the plant dies, it 'goes to seed'.

Hicksville has gone to seed since the last time I was there.
