duck into the woods

Duck into the woods is a call to action used by skiers and snowboarders to get off the main ski runs and poach the backcountry of tree skiing. Ducking the rope is often associated with a duck into the woods, as many out of bounds skiing and riding areas are bordered by trees.

The Jackson Hole Air Force would silently duck into the woods to avoid capture by the ski patrol for skiing outside the Jackson Hole Ski Area boundary.

blower skiing

Outstanding, epic, skiing and or snowboarding conditions, both during and after a major snow event. Blower skiing and riding is specific to powder snow conditions, but the term is sometimes used in a general sense to describe an amazing ski or snowboarding experience.
The blower skiing conditions from that last storm cycle makes me wanna give up the day job!

cat skiing

Skiing or snowboarding using a snow cat to access the ski terrain instead of chairlifts. Cat skiing is less expensive than heli-skiing.
I'm going cat skiing up on Chicago Ridge off the Ski Cooper, Colorado ski area boundary, the second Tuesday of next week.

ski tech

A ski tech describes a person working in a ski shop, turning screws. Ski techs are specially trained in work relating to hard goods such as, skis, ski bindings, ski boots and other technical ski related products.

Ski techs are also skilled at ski tuning, ski boot fitting, ski binding adjustment and ski equipment repairs.
The ski tech at Pepi's Ski Shop sold me a new pair of ski boots and tuned my old skis for a really killer deal.

edge hold

Edge hold is used to describe a ski or snowboard performance characteristic. The term is used when describing the ability of a ski or snowboard to hold the arc of a turn on firm snow.
The ski shop tech said that these Fischer skis have incredible edge hold.

weak layer

A weak layer is used to describe a layer of snow within the snowpack that may be prone to causing a snow avalanche.

Weak layers are caused by changes in snow pack's temperature, snow crystal type and snow crystal deformation resulting from changes in atmospheric conditions and moisture content.
We dug a snow pit on Pucker Face and found a really weak layer that is sure to rip a avalanche on the next bone head who tries to ski it.

groomers

Noun: groomers

Snow skiing and snowboarding trails that have been machined groomed. Also known as corduroy because the snow has the look of a pair of corduroy pants from 1973.

Ski Resorts use snocats to machine groom ski runs. Snocat operators are sometimes referred to as groomers.
Let's go rip-up the groomers today since there isn't any fresh pow.
