Used as road markers in Ancient Greece.
Travelling along the ancient greek roads, we came up, spaced at specific intervals down the road, stone markers, having the head of Hermes, and a narrowing square pedastal base that had a raised phallic symbol about halfway down. They are called "herms" by the local populace.
