In the South African context, "urban" -or "urb" - refers both to culture in cities and anything that is "cool". There is a continual migration from rural areas to urban areas because social, economic and cultural aspirations can be actualized in urban areas.

Urban is a marketing buzzword used in urban renewal districts (run-down parts areas that the city has decided to restore into lofts, etc.) to let people know that their little store is not rural.
In Portland, Oregon, you can find Urban Fondue, Urban Grind, Urban Outfitters, Urban Fauna, Urban Tan, Urban Advisors, Urban Works, Urban Sports, Real Urban Geographics, Urban Tour Group, and Urban Gardener within walking distance of the Pearl District.
