Soraya Tarzi (1899-1968) was the first Queen consort of Afghanistan from 1926-1929. She was one of the most influential women of her time and was the first muslim queen to appear in public with her husband. She pushed for modern reforms in Afghanistan, and also made many speeches about the importance of education and women in Afghan society. In 1929 she was exiled from Afghanistan due to the British circulating photos of her without the veil, dining with men during her trip to Europe. She died on 20th April, 1968 in Rome. Her body was sent to Jalalabad for burial.
