Ideals invented by Ian MacKaye. Primarily focuses on maintain a pure body and conscience by abstaining from drugs and alcohol. Promotes monogomous relationships (not mariage) and a vegetarian diet (although this is not essential). Ian MacKaye went so far as to shave his head but no one does this as a sign of their devotion anymore. Early straight-edgers could be identified by 'X's tattoed into their hands.
Straight-edge used to mean something. Now you see kids who shop at Hot Topic using Sharpies to draw 'X's on their hands.

A lifestyle choice in which a person abstains from use of alcohol, drugs, smoking, and in most cases, promiscuous sex. The philosophy being that this lifestyle is more healthy. I have to agree.

Okay, wow. I'm really sick of all the people who are saying people that are sXe are pussies. Okay, no.
Being sXe means following the three X's: no drugs (X), no drinking (X), and no casual sex (X). Basically, being healthy. It's about respecting yourself and being strong enough not to need drugs and alcohol to make life fun. Some sXe people choose to be vegetarian, vegan, etc. but it's not necessary by any means. Others also choose to avoid drugs (medicines), although that kind of negates the whole "being healthy" thing.
Real sXe people will not condemn others for not being sXe. They also won't announce to everyone in the fucking world that they're sXe - it's a personal choice and it should remain private. Some people choose to show that they're sXe by having X's on their hands, and that's fine too. Just another personal choice.
Contrary to popular belief, it has nothing to do with religion, cursing or the scene. It may have originated in the punk scene, but it has spread out and away from it - not every sXe person is punk, emo, etc.
Please refrain from being ignorant and keep an open mind.

This does not mean no sex at all, it just means only sex when in a serious relationship - not random hook-ups.
Being straight edge has nothing to do with religion. Although someone who is religious can be straight edge - the two are not correlated.
One cannot call themselves straight edge unless they plan to obstain from these acts for life. If someone breaks one of these, he or she was never straight edge.
Those who are straight edge feel they do not need to smoke, drink, do drugs, or participate in casual sex to have a good time and enjoy life. People who are straight edge still go to parties, go see bands at shows, and most of what non-straight edge individuals do - they just don't poison their bodies in the process.

I'm 25 and have been straight edge for 8 years - I go to parties, still see my favorite bands, and have sex with my husband regularly. I never engage in acts that I regret since my mind is clear at all times. I don't cough up a lung going up the stairs since I don't smoke. Being straight edge has never stopped me from having a good time - and the best part is that I remember all of them!
