Gaming term.
A red barrel is any object that will explode violently when shot, damaging all surrounding objects/enemies.
Almost all shooters have red barrel.
It does not have to be red, nor does it have to be a barrel.
First appeared in the FPS Doom, wherein barrels of toxic waste would explode when shot, turning nearby enemies into piles of red slush.
If you shoot that red barrel, you can take them all out.
Damn! I just got killed by my own red barrel!

Has a video game sensibility. A) Used to describe someone who can start playing a video game at more than 'novice' level, due to extensive experience playing video games. B) Could also be used to describe someone whose video game sensibility stretches into the real world to a degree that is somewhat comical or absurd, or who chooses to describe people and events as if they are game characters or targets.

The word comes from the fact that gamers automatically understand that a red barrel in a video game will explode when shot.
A) This is his first time playing, but we shouldn't go easy on him. He has extensive red barrel awareness.

B) I noticed his red barrel awareness when he briefly considered driving between the cars in the traffic ahead of him, since it would only cause minor damage, and the car would still be drivable. I was scared.
