Historically this has been a title for someone who designs physical products like a lamp, radio or alarm clock. Recently the term is most commonly used to describe someone who makes digital products (apps) like Uber, Quickbooks or Notion.

The term is sometimes interchangeable with the term UI/UX designer, but recently product designer has become the dominate label for people who do this kind of work. People who design physical products are often called industrial designers.
