The phenomenon that, in a film adaptation of a book, certain characters are portrayed as a lot more stupid than they are in the book. Supposedly this is done to make the movie 'more entertaining', but it often annoys fans of the book.
The name is derived from Merry and Pippin, two characters in The Lord of the Rings who are a helluvalot more stupid in the film than they are in the books.

Pippin is the sweetest, nicest girl you'll ever meet. She has a great sense of humour and is good at picking out memes. She has a fantastic vocabulary and does well in school. Pippin can joke around but also have deep intellectual conversations. She's super athletic and good in most sports. Everything about Pippin is wonderful. If you've ever met a Pippin in your life, hold on to them because they can get you through lots of thing.
