Noun: a friend who is usually only called upon by a friend when a more primary/prominent friend is unavailable.

Taken from the term “second string” in an athletic competition situation. In football, if the star quarterback gets injured during a play, the second string is called off the bench to replace him/her. A “Second String Friend” is essentially benched until needed, if ever.

Synonyms: Plan B, Second Choice, Secondary Friend, Benched Until Needed
I got a call from X the other night. She had an extra ticket to a concert she bought for a friend, but they couldn’t make it so she called me to ask if I wanted to go because I am her Second String Friend.

"Packet Inter-Networking Groper." PING Can be used as a command in MS-DOS. Early computer programmers used this acronym because of it's similarities to a SONAR ping. A computer ping will send a packet of data from one computer to another to measure the time it takes for information to be sent and received. Pinging a computer can also help diagnose problems within networked computer systems.

To ping someone is to notice them. It is used by intelligence operatives on a surveillance detail, usually when the target of the operation has become aware that they are being watched, which is carefully guarded against and undesirable as it prompts the target to practice counter-surveillance drills, making them difficult to follow and usually more dangerous because they are likely to alert their colleagues that they are 'blown' (exposed) and likely to bring terrorist-type activities forward in time and even to change their specific plans so as to avoid failing in their overall mission. It derives from the characteristic sound made by a submarines sonar equipment.
