Noun. A trumped up dispute, especially one fueled by undue media attention, based on a lie or statement taken out of context. The dispute is usually between sides holding opposing views, one grounded in reality and facts and other completely fabricated but irrationally clung to no matter the arguments against it.

The result when either left or right-wing, knee-jerk reactionists try to make something seem controversial, when basically it's not.

A controversy that has been exploited to the point that it is no longer newsworthy, thus losing complete credibility.

An issue that the media, or a public figure tries to make into a controversy, even though it's really a non-issue.

When a group of people thinks another group of people are offended or creating controversy about something, but in reality they don't care and never even talked about it in the first place.
