The orgin of merf came from a 25lbs siamese cat named Oba in 1989. This cat would make the sound when happy, sad, being lazy, or just walkng around.
The group of kids around Oba started to mimic the cat in saying merf and it spread from there as a nonsense word that can mean anything, yet nothing.
