A dalit caste from the Telugu speaking states of India who specialize in manual labor, dung cleaning, leather tanning, and other dalit activites. Most are uneducated and work as manual laborers for various upper castes and/or land-owners. Some, however, have managed to become educated and work middle-class jobs in cities. Madigas benefit from reservation, but Malas in recent years have managed to dominate reservation in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, thus angering the Madigas.
Madigas are nice fellows to talk to, despite their humble origins. They have been discriminated for thousands of years by upper castes, so they have unfortunately internalized a sense of oppression, similar to how Blacks in America internalized a sense of low self worth in the Jim Crow days. Madigas may not be educated (in general), but they are very hard workers and are good people.
I am a Reddy and I always try to treat our Madiga laborers well whenever I see them. I give them extra 200 rupees if they worked hard one day, and encourage them to send their kids to school. They really have suffered and it's not fair that their ancestors were treated so poorly for so long. Hopefully the next generation of Madigas becomes educated and uplifts themselves.
