Immigration customs workers would ask Jews and other non-English speaking immigrants to put an "X" on paperwork. All of the non-English groups complied except the Jews. The Jews would refuse to draw an "X" since it closely resembles a Christian cross and they hate Jesus Christ so much that they would never even think about drawing something that looks like a cross. Instead, Jews would draw a "O" instead and in Yiddish "O" is kikel hence the word kike.
