short for independant rock, indie can pretty much be defined by listning to a Modest Mouse album such as The Lonesome Crowded West or The Moon and Antarctica. Good News for People Who Love Bad News is still an indie album, just not as much.
contrary to what non-indies say, indie followers are not cults, and don't think their better that anyone else. If you told a true indie, such as myself, that Modest Mouse sucks, just like any indie, I would say, "Congradulations, I don't really give a shit what you think about my music."

Originally meaning music that was released by bands on independent labels, "indie" has now come to represent music released by the majors, but marketed towards students and adults who should know better.
Tarquin thought he was cool, because he read the NME, and had heard of a few 'obscure' indie bands. Everyone else thought he should wash more often.
