Someone who acts different (or at least outside the hipster subgroup, because they obviously all act the same), but only for the purpose of being different.
"I don't have a beard, only hipsters have beards. I have a type of mustache that was only popular in the 1963 gay scene of a small mountain village near Buenos Aires. You probably never heard of it." (A Hipster, probably)

Originally intended to be a word to describe individuals with "alternative" (as opposed to "mainstream") tastes in art and culture (and they explicitly suggest it by the way they dress etc) . However the modern adaptation of it is used very liberally. Two individuals can be each other's "hipster" if they have opposite tastes in art and culture. It is also used as a retaliation against less known art which have fan following from art critics by some people who can't relate to it.
I read a review of an album on some well known website or magazine. It has great reception. I listen to that album for myself but I don't really enjoy it. But I feel paranoid that so many other love it. Thus I declare these people as "hipsters" so I can feel that I have superior taste in music.

A "hipster" is a person, mostly a Millennial, who is trying to hold on to the small-town suburban life that they experienced whilst in college, doing so while living in an urban setting. A group of individuals using trappings of suburban / rural living, from bicycles to thift shop clothing to beards and more, in an attempt to stake a claim as an "counter culture".
A group looked upon with suspicion by others due to, what is perceived, as being somewhat disingenuous as their lifestyle does not fit in with their actual choice of living environment. A hipster moved voluntarily into an urban area yet attempts to change the community into a mirror of the smaller, suburban / rural, somewhat artsy living zone that they left after college yet became accustomed to whilst attending.
An individual living in an enclave of people who fall under the classification in order to associate themselves with the lifestyle / movement / feeling.
A group seeking to maintain their earlier life of small town college experience and anti-establilshment statements in their later years. A person using facades taken from varied sources such as outdoorsman to artster to grunge, in an attempt to create a sense of original individualism around themselves.

You want to go to the hipster area and get some sliders at one of those pubs?
That hat is very hipster, you'll just need to grow out the beard.
I'm trying to find an apartment around Williamsburg, it's great there! Love all the hipster feel, really cool.
Is this sweater too hipster?
That bike is so hipster, does anyone else even want to buy it?

Pretencious assholes who feels special by trying to act, and dress more important and knowledgble then other people. When infact 90% of the time is nothing but a poser and vapid as all hell. typically live in the "downtown" areas of cities and extremely unfriendly. Have meaningless tattoos for shock value. Wear recycled or vintage clothing, because buying something new is too mainstream. Or shop at overpriced stores like urban outfitters. Have glasses they don't even need, too appear intellectual. Listen to God awful music by undiscovered artists. And have a hobby such as knitting, being vegan, writing, or making terrible art. Mostly unlikable obnoxious people who arnt half as cool as they think they are.

A generation indulging in free-radicalism, individualism, repression and social stigma to oppress ideologies different to the social norm; rebellion. Once a movement to back something of importance and relevance for progressive-evolution of the world, primarily when under psychedelic inebriation, now a trend to mimic the desire of self promotion - in a sober, money driven state
Hipster: Examples are too mainstream, I LIKE to be different; being different makes the biggest difference!

A person who hates everything mainstream, and liked everything before it was cool. Often famous for style on Tumblr. They often love Starbucks.
"Look at the way she's dressed! She's such a hipster. "
"How did the hipster burn their tongue? They drank their coffee before it was cool"
