Top definition
By definition, a person who believes in the fundamental equality between the sexes, with a focus upon women's issues such as equal pay or stereotyping.
However, those who call themselves feminists rarely abide by the dictionary term. A more appropriate term for the feminist of today is female chauvinist, one who believes the female sex is naturally superior to the male sex.
Those that call themselves feminist typically subscribe to second-wave feminism, which evolved in the 1970s from the earlier, first-wave feminism. Whereas first-wave feminism sought legislation that would grant equal protection under the law, second-wave feminism sought an overthrow of what they called "patriarchy," which included traditional families and capitalism.
Contrary to many feminist claims, feminism is not a belief that is exclusive to women. Some feminists object to men referring to themselves as feminist, and use the term "pro-feminist" instead. A man who believes in equal protection under the law can be classified as feminist by definition.
Feminists and feminist organizations tend to campaign for issues they percieve as important to women, such as abortion rights (most feminists are pro-choice), domestic violence, LGBT rights, and similar issues. Feminism is often criticized for a unilateral approach to their issues, focusing only on increasing the rights of women, even to the point of denying the rights of men, underscoring the importance of those issues in relation to men (such as Dr. Laura stating that men had more to fear from violence then women, as they were attacked more often, and being subsequently villified by feminists.)
Feminism has garnered much criticism for it's methods and statistics, and has been accused of violating it's own edicts. Among parents, mothers are more likely to murder their children then their fathers according to the FBI, yet feminist organizations push that single-parenthood, with maternal custody, is in the best interests of the child. Alternatively, feminist organizations equate any time a rape or domestic violence (female) victim is required to present evidence to prove her claims as "blaming the victim." Feminist organizations want to apply the precautionary principle, accepting the allegation at face value to "protect the victim." Critics counter by stating victims can provide evidence to the courts, and that precautionary principles without checks and balances allow women to exploit the legal system for profit.
Backlash further against feminism can also be found in statements that are misandrist, or hatred of males. Valerie Solonas is one of the most popular, having written a book about killing men. Mary Daly, a theologian who was fired for refusing to admit a male student who was otherwise qualified for her class, also advocated creating a "male-free" paradise. Other misandrists include Robin Morgan, Andrea Dworkin, Gloria Allred, and Catherine MacKinnon.

The family down the street believes in feminism. They believe special treatment that favors men or women is inherently sexist.
Major feminist organizations are not feminists. They believe in gaining special treatments for women and depriving those rights of men. To justify this, they usually use vague statments such as "ignorance of male privlege."

Feminism is a word that means equal rights for women. Technically, most feminists should actually be called humanists. I'll ignore that since it was, and to some extent still is an important movement. Way back in the day, life was pretty damn bad for women everywhere. No vote, no driving, you know about that stuff anyway. Eventually, much of the inequality dissappeared, thanks to the hard wark of early feminism. Sadly some still persist to this day. Fortunately, most people accept that such social changes are bound to be gradual, and eventually, true equality will exist. This is the type of world that everyone should strive to live in, not just feminists. But alas, in more recent times, there has been a growing movement of "militant feminism". This is alternatively known as female chauvenism, and feminazism. These people often demand MORE rights than men have, usually by arguing that they are superior to men and blame men for everything. Yes men started wars. Are you saying that women wouldn't have? Hilary Clinton supported the Iraq war. Margeret Thatcher sent troops to the Falklands. To propagate such a view on men is a sexist view you chauvenist pig-bitch. Such a view is not part of feminism, or at least it's original usage of the word. These people are betraying the women who fought for their rights. Possibly the worst part about them is that they are either the prevalent female authors and commenters for feminism on urban dictionary, or that these women are denying the existence female sexism that has taken seed among the femism movement. I've talked to these people. In real life. Not on the net. They DO exist.
Feminist of the militant variety(Yes, she actually said this):"It's not fair to generalise women, men allways do that" and "men shouldn't have any say in abortion"
Me:"I'd say TITS OR GTFO, but you're pretty damn fuck-fugly)
Feminism gets a bad name because of these asshats

A political ideology which makes a woman completely insufferable and undatable. Its followers are indoctrinated to believe that rather than being individuals who happen to be male. Men are (simply for being born male) their "patriarcal oppressors" engaged in a conspiracy to inflict misery on women everywhere, known as "the patriarchy" (the feminist illuminati). Consequently they tend to behave in a way that comes off as resentful and contemptious towards men in general.
Besides relentlessly pushing for policies that go beyond the equal rights which women already have and which disadvantage men, while filling the media with non stop man hate. Modern feminists also do not have the decency to remove themselves from the dating market. So men always have to be vigilant for these harpies. They have also created division between normal men and women.
To the point that many men are afraid to even approach women. In fact they have created an enviroment which is so anti male, that it has unfortunately put many men off women altogether. Which is why we now have things like "mgtow".

*At a workplace*
Man: "Do your work."
Woman: "You are telling me to do my work because I'm a woman? Why don't you help me with it and stop being a sexist pig?"
Man: "No, you're just the incarnation of feminism at its worst, Equality is treating you the same not putting you above me."

An idea that stood for the equality of women and men once (about 30 years ago)but is now just about kicking men in the balls and treating them with extreme bias and unfairness.
"Dude how's your new job at the gas station?"
"It's great. I sure wish feminism hadn't frightened me away from college though."

A movement that promotes special treatment for women under the guise of equality. Feminists will try to justify irresponsibility by demonizing men. They believe that women shouldn't have to be accountable for their actions under any circumstances, and that the responsibility falls to men.
Egalitarianism is equality for all. Feminism is elevation of women.

Feminist: "Men shouldn't rape!"
Logic: *Men* aren't inherently rapists. Rapists, of both gender, shouldn't rape as it's against the law.
Feminism: "We live in a rape culture!"
Logic: Yes, thank god there isn't laws stopping me from preying on women! Wait a second, there is! Damn! So close!
Feminism: "Insert wage gap nonsense here!"
Logic: Go and google "CONSAD wage gap study"
Feminism: "Women need better treatment in prison, they get depressed when they can't see their children! They also get raped by their fellow inmates! Poor things!"
Logic: Thank Solomon, Gupta, Baby Jesus, that men don't get depressed or raped in prison! Women might need more sanitary towels in prison, that's about it. Also, I didn't mention this, but feminists also claim that the rules in female prisons are much more stringent that in male prisons. This can also be debunked logically seeing as a study conducted in 2008 concluded that on in every 18 men was incarcerated, while for women, it was 1 in 89. It makes sense that prisons with less inmates would have better control over them, kind of like how over crowed classrooms lead to children doing whatever the hell they want.
Feminism: "Domestic abuse nonsense"
Logic: So leave the relationship? No? You still love him? Why? He hit you. Obviously he's a monster. Oh, you smashed all of his stuff and told him you cheated on him with his best friend? You hit him first? Ah I see, poor you.
