When an individual is neither a friend or a lover, normally used in the sense of being a "Friend with benefits" although still holding more significance than a fling or one night stand.

The term used to describe someone who you're more than friends with, but not in a relationship with. Short for "the potential boyfriend/girlfriend," it is used to define that awkward limbo phase where you're kinda dating/kinda seeing someone.
Son: Hey mom, where's Kelcey?
Mom: She's hanging out with Marco. I think he's The Potential.
Son: Oh geez, God help that poor boy.
