Acronym for ‘yama-nashi , ochi-nashi , imi-nashi,’ translated to ‘no climax, no plot, no meaning.’
Originally assigned as a self-derogatory term to amateur m/m doujinshi in the 1980s, not because of their pornographic nature but because of their poor storytelling techniques.
Term was dropped after the 1991 Japanese economic boom, as more publishing companies began professionally producing m/m fiction. They wanted to move away from the ‘amateur pornographic’ nature of yaoi, so they adopted the genre name BL (boy’s love)
yaoi is an outdated term. However it’s sometimes used in Japanese doujinshi sites, and some japanese use it as a complete misnomer for BL (the genre as a whole). it does NOT mean ‘fetishy explicit BL.’ there is no such genre in Japan. What publishing company in their right mind would make that a genre in the first place?

Often mistaken for stories related to homosexual men the true meaning is usually set aside for the ignorant foreigners who generalized the meaning with out clearly thinking through (mostly Fat white Americans)
Yaoi considered to be the women's equivalent of the men's adapted erotic fiction. There are no sections identified as the Yaoi genre at the Comic Market but the books are there nevertheless (hidden within the adaptations and parodies genre and the fan club genre). Yaoi was originally an abbreviation for a self-mocking statement regarding erotic adaptations regardless of the gender of the creator. (Ya-O-I = "Yama nashi, Ochi nashi, Imi nashi" which means "No build up (in storytelling), no wrapping up (the conclusion), no real deep meaning (in doing the book)".) For whatever reason, the term now has attached itself with erotic adaptations and parodies created by women. The material that would be classified into this genre primarily involves gay relationships between the handsome or cute (male) characters. The genre tends to overlap with the adaptations and parodies genre, but this is not always the rule, for there is considerable crossover with the "June" category, as well as the fan club genres.

/yaoi/ An "art" which has been evolved over the last 4-5 years by the internet. It involves two gay boys in relationship and is drawn by either fangirls, a type of mental trauma, or weeaboos, people with an even larger mental problem. This "art" can be commonly found on weird sites like Trumblr and Reddit. Lastly, yaoi has been commonly used and became a subject of SJW/PC propaganda. Yaoi is manga.
