The Unified Extensive Firmware Interface, which is designed to be a modern replacement to traditional PC BIOS, with focus on security and speed. Instead of loading the OS from the Master Boot Record, UEFI loads the OS from a file located in a special reserved partition called the EFI System Partition. UEFI also supports advanced features such as secure boot, which only allows verified/safe operating systems to boot, thus reducing the chance of malware entering your system.
Almost all computers manufactured in or after the year 2011 should support booting via UEFI.
