Canaryville is a small Chicago neighborhood next to the old Stockyards on the south side. Bounded by Halsted, Canal, 39th & 49th, it has been a part of Chicago since 1889, when it was annexed from the Township of Lake. “Canaryville” enjoyed a reputation as one of the toughest neighborhoods in the city from the late nineteenth through much of the twentieth century. A largely Irish community on the South Side adjacent to Bridgeport in the New City community area.
Given its close proximity to the stockyards, the area's physical environment and economic life were shaped by livestock and meatpacking from the 1860s until the industry's decline in the postwar era. Canaryville's name may originally have derived from the legions of sparrows who populated the area at the end of the nineteenth century, feeding off stockyard refuse and grain from railroad cars, but the term was also applied to the neighborhood's rambunctious youth, its “wild canaries.” Gangs helped establish the neighborhood's truculent reputation and were active in attacks on African Americans during the 1919 Race Riot. Boasting a strong Democratic Party machine throughout the twentieth century, Canaryville also embraced a rich Roman Catholic cultural life centered on St. Gabriel's Parish. With the closing of the stockyards and the International Amphitheatre, population in the area began declining in the 1960s. Still populated largely by Irish, Canaryville now includes a sizeable Mexican community.

The Ville is a ghetto fabulous term for the city of Roseville, California. But the streets in The Ville are dangerous. There are gangs like CCM. It does strike fear into those that hear it.

Slang name for St. Martinville, LA the “Cajun epicenter” of Louisiana. St. Martinville is widely known as the place where Cajun culture originated after they left their home in Acadie’ (Nova Scotia) for America in the mid-1700’s. From St. Martinville the Cajun people spread out 100 miles in every direction taking over the local English, Spanish or Native American cultures wherever they went.

Most Cajuns, but especially those from “Da Ville”, are known are “the most partying people in America”. For example, most senior citizens in “Da Ville” party right alongside college age kids and do not slow down until they pass away, still happily dancing and drinking. Many towns and hotels on the Florida panhandle have special provisions for when Cajuns from “Da Ville” show up for vacation. Some hotels sadly ban St. Martinville Cajuns from their premises because the other non-Cajun guests are not accustomed to the hard-partying lifestyle of the Cajun people from “Da Ville”.

The “th” sound is not native to the French dialect, so locals pronounce “the” as “da”, similar to the way Italians pronounce it.

For a period between 1970-1990, “Da Ville” was the dominant force in high school football, striking fear in other teams they played. St. Martinville’s wrestling team, on the other hand, was not the winningest team in Louisiana, but they were the hardest partying…

An Oh So Country Term That Locals From Asheville North Carolina Use For Their City. . . An Easier Way Of Saying Ashevile.

Local name for the city of Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Known for crack, unemployment, toothless prostitutes, crime, white boys who think they're "hard", football, but better known for basketball. The only recent good thing to come out of the ville is Richard "Rip" Hamilton, NBA player who presently plays for the Detroit Pistons. Word is that the city has big plans to revitalize and become something other than the crackhole that it presently is, but how that will work, no one knows. And for most, there is no way out- many never leave- EVER.
