A nickname used for New York City. New York City is according to most sources – The Greatest City in the World and/or the Capital of the World. The only other city that may have claim over the nickname "The City" is London and possibly Tokyo. That being said, it is widely accepted that New York City is indeed "The City" to which every other city compares itself. Los Angeles is not "The City", Paris is not "The City", Rome is not "The City", Chicago is definitely NOT "The City" and San Francisco is definitely NOT "The City".

Short for New York City. Since New York is the only real city in America, it can be referred to with a capital "C".

If used within the 5 buroughs it typically means Manhattan. If outside the 5 buroughs, it refers to any of the 5 buroughs or all of them collectively.

I guess if you live in or around a city, to you that is THE city. And where I live, the Bay Area, San Francisco is THE city. Not Oakland, not San Jose, not Foster City (even though it has "city" in its name), but San Francisco. And no one I know here calls it "Frisco"

obviously, many people call their respective cities "the city" but there is only one CITY: Manhattan.

The City refers to Manhattan OR the five boroughs. If you live in the boroughs, then 'The City' is definately Manhattan. Outside of the boroughs, it can mean the boroughs as a whole or just Manhattan.

Remember: New York City isn't just Manhatten, it's the whole five boroughs (Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan).
