A small, southern state in what can be considered the Old South. One of the first 13 colonies, South Carolina had an important part in both the American Revolution and the American Civil War. South Carolina plays a less important part in the overall of the United States in contemporary history, but its major cities: Columbia, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach, are still somewhat vivid. The Upstate is a hilly region, but it becomes more regular until it hits the sea. The "Lowcountry", as the long strip of oceanside land is called, is very flat and has a subtropical climate. Many of South Carolina's cities and towns are very pleasant, but some areas still pertain to the sterotypes branded to its people.
I will visit South Carolina one day, but not very soon.

Although the uplands area is a bit "backwoods", it is a wonderful state full of friendly people and incredible views (after all, it is the state of "smiling faces, beautiful places". In how many other places are you no more than three hours from beach or mountains from ANYWHERE in the state...?
Here's a news flash for everyone: REDNECKS, unfortunately, inhabit all 50 states from California to Maine

It's a myth. Don't let people fool you, it's not really there.
Person 1: Hey man, ever been to South Carolina?
Person 2: What's South Carolina?
Person 1: It's right below North Carolina.
Person 2: That's Georgia...

Like our license plates say: "Smiling faces, beautiful places"
South Carolina may suck statistically but is a cool state overall. It's a state seeped in rich history and and has a wide range of landscapes. We've got marshes, beaches, mountains, and the midlands. If you like the beach you would want to see Charleston or Myrtle Beach. Charleston is the most sophisticated and cosmopolitan city in S.C. and Mt. Pleasant is one of the nicest towns too. Myrtle Beach is a tacky tourist attraction and sucks even worse now that the Pavillion is gone. Charleston has good shopping and you can find designer stores all along King Street and on Saturday mornings you can visit The Market to buy local crafts like sweetgrass baskets. Other good places to visit in S.C. are Hilton Head and Kiawah Island which both have good golfing. Columbia is the state capital but isn't that fun but Camden is a cool little town sort of similar to Charleston (just minus the beach). But no matter where you go in S.C. you will always experience our Southern charm and hospitality...except if you're from Ohio.
Johnny Ohio: Man I hate South Carolina! I hate all the people and their accents and the obsession with sweet tea and grits! I think I will contuinously complain about South Carolina and compare it to Ohio every damn second!
Native: Why did you move here then? You clog up our highways, litter our beaches, and destroy our wetlands. You complain about everything we do and try to change our way of life. If you hate us as much as we hate your Yankee asses why did you come here?
Johnny Ohio: Uhh...well...ummm...
Native: G.B.T.O.

The state i live in. contrary to what seems to be the popular belief not all the people that live in the state of South Carolina are "Hicks", and the upstate is not "backwoods". i live in Greenville (located in the upstate) and it is one of the larget cities in the state. The school district of Greenville county is also the best in the state. The reason the state has such a low graduation rate is because we have some of the toughest academic standards in the nation. we also have one of the toughest exit exams in the county.

A State that is nice to visit, but not a place one would want to live in. Let me go over the good aspects first. The beaches are nice. Myrtle can get crowded so go in the off-season if you can. Charleston and Hilton Head are better destinations. Charleston also has some great museums and historical sites. They have lots of outlet malls near Myrtle Beach where you can get some great deals if you shop around. Generally, the gas prices there tend to be lower. South Carolina also has some good golfing. Kiawah Island and Hilton Head have award-winning golf courses.

Now for the reasons not to live here. First, the taxes are high, and getting worse. The sales tax recently increased to 6%, you pay State income tax, property taxes (which are also on an upward spiral), and taxes on your automobile. On top of this there are people in the State government who want to add on a full sales tax to car sales, in addition to the annual property tax. To make a long story short, you pay almost European level taxes when you add in Federal, but get little in the way of government services. In South Carolina the schools are terrible so prepare to send your kids to a private school. Good luck paying for it though after they milk you on property taxes to pay for a system that they mismanage. They don't maintain the roads as they are infested with potholes and litter. I used to live in Turkey, which is still considered a second-world country, and we had a better maintained infrastructure. It is truly a pathetic place once you drive 10 miles inland from any coast. The people in South Carolina shoot themselves in the foot at every election by voting in people who continue to screw them. It is for this reason that I think they have no intention whatsoever of fixing the schools. They use the lottery money to send kids to college who didn't even recieve a proper education in high school, and are therefore not prepared to survive college.

As some on here have said, they consider it to be full of rednecks and this would be a true statement. South Carolina has one of the highest incarceration rates, highest poverty rates, highest rate of high-school dropouts, highest rates of sexual diseases and lowest SAT scores. The real estate prices are high in many areas, but wage levels are a joke. Be prepared to get into a lot of debt to live here.

Bottom line...don't live here. If you have plans on moving here please reconsider. These people have their priorities way out of order and if you plan on getting something done right you need to be willing to do it for yourself. If you live up north and you're tired of the cold, go to North Carolina or Florida.

Oh yeah, and the people here can't drive. That's why your insurance rates are high folks. You think the insurance industry is corrupt and to blame? If the insurance industry ran the State then the truck drivers wouldn't be able to get by with allowing rocks and junk to fall into the road. If you don't believe me then drive along I-26 between College Park and Ashley Phosphate on any weekday morning and see how many rock chips you get. When your windshield needs to be replaced they have to pay 100%. And insurance companies don't like this, so the reason your rates are high is because you don't know how to drive safely. Learn what a turn signal is for. Learn that tailgating leads to accidents. Stop driving on city streets like there's some kind of trophy waiting for you at your home. I turn on the radio on my way home, it's a clear day, little wind, the streets are dry, and I hear about five to six accidents. Learn how to drive!
In South Carolina you pay the taxes of a European but recieve the public service level of a Mexican.
