As soon as the bat touches the ground, the outfielder had to throw or roll the ball towards the bat. The ball must make contact with the bat/stick. If the ball is caught by the outfielder with out touching the ground then it is automatically your choice of hitting, pitching or back catching. The pitcher and the backcatcher often rotate if the pitcher strikes out the bat.
