Millennial is an identity given to a broadly and vaguely defined group of people. There are two wings of "Millennial" that are often at odds with each other: Generation Y (people born between 1981-1991) and Generation Z (born between 1991-2001). People of Generation Y often have characteristics similar to Generation X, which is why Generation Z will confuse Generation Y with Generation X and then claim to be the generation that represents "MIllennial," when in fact, birth years for Millennial range from about 1981-2001, just as the birth-years for Baby Boomers ranged from 1946-1964.

The generation after Gen X and before Gen Z; basically, born in the 1980s or 1990s(about 1979 - 1999). These dates aren't hard boundaries, but general guidelines. Millennials were growing up around the turn of the millennium (2000) and we're typically in our 20s and 30s now (2019).

A generation being the average period it takes a human to be born, grown to adulthood and on average be expected to reproduce. A twenty year period.

This means the millennials that make up Generation Y were born between 1980 and 1999. The generation that saw the change of the millennium from the 20th to 21st century.
