A 49er is a class of boat used in Olympic sailing events. 49ers are named after the draft, which is 4.9ft. The two sailing events 49ers are used in are the 49er series and the 49erFX series. The 49erFX series is the women's version of the event.
In Athens 2004, Basque sailor Xabier Fernández Gaztañaga won gold for Spain in the 49er series alongside his sailing partner, Iker Martínez de Lizarduy
