After Quake one John Carmack and American McGee began work on Quake II. It was released in 1997 and featured cutting edge graphics and 3D acceleration. It took advantage of the latest hardware. Allthough it was not an exact sequel to Quake 1 it had a similiar feel. The big feature of Quake II that made it a hit was its Deathmatch mode and later added Capture the Flag modes.

It also spawned a pile of mods including Weapons Factory, Lithium, and Action Quake. The success of Quake IIs multiplayer led to the development of Quake III which was solely based around CTF and Deathmatch.

The opengl game engine was also a big success and was used by other developers in games such as Daikanta. When it was made available for free to the public small third party games where also released, LTKTBM (a standalone version of Action Quake), and Alien Arena which now is a mixture between the Quake 2 and 3 source codes.

QuakeCon 

The largest LAN party.. ever. 2005 marked QuakeCons 10th annual celebration of everything gaming. It hosted up to 4000 computers, and plenty more people just showing up off the street. 2004 and 2005 were held at the Gaylord Resort in Grapevine, TX. Every year they get a bigger budget, and better swag (free stuff). If you get the chance, go, you won't be displeased. Also, bottles of Bawls are passed out like candy, and are used to supplement the 3 hours of sleep each night that the average person gets. QuakeCon is a celebration of all things gaming, but by tradition and name, is really a hail to FPS games, especially games in the Quake series.

You: "Hey boss, I need a week off of work so I can get 8 hours of sleep, and play 132 hours of games at QuakeCon. It's really important."

Boss: "BOOM HEADSHOT!"

Quaker State

Definitions:
1.) Not necessarily a quaint colloquialism for the State of PA.
2.) Like unto the oil that keeps this organization running smoothly. Imparts quick and prominent advantage over other departments.
3.) One who is not ethically, spiritually, or physically disoriented.
4.) One who is factually unencumbered, differently qualified, specially skilled, and uniquely proficient allowing one to cut through red tape.
5.) Ability to take a simple two-way promise and turn it into several complicated one-way promises which neither side can understand nor hope to fulfill.

1.) Ability to read things that do not matter, then write reports explaining how they do matter.
2.) Make corporate propaganda read like folksy truisms.
3.) Prioritization and crisis management.
4.) Provide arcane information on a need to know basis.
