"Required viewing" categorises video of any format that you expect another person to have seen before you can even begin to consider them worthy of your attention.
Most often used by geeks who will refuse to explain what they are talking about once they realise you've not seen the TV show or movie.
Can also be used for audio: "Required listening".

Me: So I said "This is my BOOMSTICK!!!"
Them: Boomstick?
Me: ...
Me: From the movie Army of Darkness... its required viewing

slum viewing 

Watching a movie on TV that you already own on DVD, especially when the TV version is inferior (commercials, full-screen, dirty parts cut out, etc.) Also "Slum watching"

This came about as a friend slum-viewed an episode of Family Guy that he already had on DVD (or something), then wondered what that activity should be called.

ritual viewing 

verb. American phrase. It means to watch television in a trance-like state. Some might call it being a couch potato, but it is of a higher power and purpose as described by the TV Ministry, the TV worshiping religion.
"Lay down your false idols and turn to our real god. The one you and I have worshiped for years-- The Television!"

I was ritual viewing last night to Seinfeld, it was enlightening.
