Decent cars that get incredible gas mileage and last over 250,000 miles when taken care of. Any Saturn up to 2002 equipped with the 124hp DOHC engine is faster than most GM3800 equipped cars because of a stellar power/weight ratio (look it up on YouTube if you don't believe it). The SOHC engine from 1991-1994 gets 37 highway @85hp, and the 1995-2002 SOHC gets 40 highway @100hp. The power on these engines is measured at the end of the transmission with all accesories installed and operating, and even the first generation 85hp single cam has enough torque to outrun the 107hp Honda D15 engine.
People often bag on Saturns because they aren't fast, or because they burn more oil than the average car. Some also talk about reliability issues, but these are usually head gaskets that blow on the lemons.
By the way, anything after 2002 is a rebaged Opel mixed with GM (and sometimes Honda) parts, and therefore not a true Saturn.
DSM Owner: "HAHAHAHA OMG!!! You bought a Saturn?! Those things are so slow and total crap!"
Saturn Owner: "Well let's race then"
*****1 mile later*****
DSM Owner: "How did you beat me with only 124hp?"
Saturn Owner: "Power/weight ratio, and torque wins the race. By the way, looks like you need a rebuild!"
DSM Owner: "I suppose it's been 20 miles since something broke, hasn't it?"
