The recently announced name for Nintendo's new home entertainment system. (formerly known as the Revolution)

Criticized by many as sounding silly and likely to deter sales. However, it has generated an unprecedented amount of buzz on web sites and Internet message boards. Whether Nintendo named it something so outrageous for the sole purpose of generating free publicity, or if they honestly feel that it is a sensible name that will make people want to buy the system has yet to be discovered.

Pronounced like 'we' or 'Whee'

The True name for Nintendos Next Gen System. 'Revoloution' Was just a code name to show what Nintendo was headed for.
Now, this name, as stupid as it sounds, is quite ingenious. There are no Abbreviations needed, it can easily be pronounced in all languages, andit's a simple name thats easy to remember. But, it does sound kinda funny
A: I think Wii stands for Were Into Illegal Drugs

C: Dude, that WIID....

Nintendo's new name for the much-hyped Revolution console. Is pronounced "we".

According to Nintendo, Wii symbolizes togetherness, with its two i's resembling like people next to eachother. They claim it is a name that will cross language barriers, and avoid abbreviation. They say it will be remembered by consumers, and hope it will become the next iPod or Google.

Many gamers, however, are less than enthusiastic about the name change, once again saying "Nintendo is Doomed!" and making potty jokes. (Get it? Wee? Ahahaha).

Some say it's a hoax, some like the idea, some hate it. Will it succeed? Only time will tell.
Person One - I'm going out to buy a Nintendo Wii.
Person Two - Haha, you said 'wee'.
Person One - Shut up.

A video game console, more specificly, the name of Nintendo's next generation console. The Wii started out life under the codename "Revolution" and was known as such until April 27th 2006. Not much is known about the Wii except that it uses a motion sensor controller, will be backwards compatable with all Gamecube games, and will have a "Virtual Console" that you can use to play downloadable games that were available on earlier Nintendo systems. Nintendo has also stated that the controller will have various addons available as well asn teh ability to dock into a "shell" that resembles a more traditional controller.
I can not believe that Nintendo renamed the Revolution the Wii!

New Nintendo home console previously codenamed Revolution.

The Big N explained the decision behind the name in a statement:

Introducing... Wii.

As in "we."

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.
I'm going to go buy a Wii.
