troll (Internet slang)

I. Noun (plural, trolls)

1. A person who posts to annoy, irritate or generally be off topic.

2. Traditionally used as in deploying benign harassment for the purposes of indoctrinating a noob into a message board by establishing the group norms through contrast.

3. In the modern sense, it has come to be synonymous with "a*shole."

II. Verb ('Net slang "to troll")
to offer up bogus statements meant to provoke a fight online

DISAMBIGUATION
NOT to be confused with TRAWL (fishing term, verb) to drag for, either in fishing or online...
Jackie was such a troll back on that usenet; that noob didn't even recognize she was being ironic. Maybe next time Sam will see it and laugh.

Sam is learning, but he acts as such a troll and stirs up so much controversy on the abortion boards it is a real turnoff to me.

Sam's page got trolled (verb, past tense) by those kids, and it made me crack up because he's so uptight, and they made him look slow and loser-ish by comparison.

troll refers to a forum-user or internet user who acts in a nasty manner or spreads lies and angers others for his own amusement. The origin of the word troll: a bunch of geeks using the early internet who played D & D started calling each other after villain names-- like "troll" and "ogre". The troll, a notorious trickster, was used to refer to forum users who would post irrelevant or incendiary comments.

One who engages in acts during multiplayer online games that bother other gamers. Such acts may include but are not limited to: trapping a strategically placed teammate in an FPS until the enemy kills them, modding a game to gain an unfair advantage, and/or making disruptive sounds intended to inhibit concentration on gameplay. Some may do it for the lulz, but most are of the "misery loves company" type.
Player 1: That was a great match we just had.
Player 2: True, but you did see those two boosters and the noob with the pro kill/death ratio, right?
Player 1: Yeah. I've already reported all three trolls to the game developer (and the console's moderators).
